Excellent tool. I am never without it, whether out cutting or at the woodpile. I would have liked the handle to be a little thicker, but it's still going strong since May of 2020. Advise sanding and re-finishing it though. The original coat was truly only token.

I have had this tool for about a year now, and it is the best back saver yet. I do not sharpen the pick end as it is just as important for the release as the pick. One must develop skill in using this as any tool. I used the Bucking Billy Ray finishing on the handle. Council Tool is just down the road in Lake Waccamaw NC.

A great back saving tool for working with firewood or piling slash. Keep it sharp. The forged model from Council tool is much superior to the more modern versions, in my opinion.

If your looking for a tool that really does as advertised....this is it end of story. The greatest back saving must have tool for ANYONE WHO HANDLES WOOD FOR HOME OR PROFESSIONALLY as most loggers will tell you. ( Important tip.....if you purchase one be SURE it's made from FORGED STEEL and has a properly oriented AMERICAN HICKORY HANDLE....DONT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY BUYING AN ALUMINUM HANDLED ONE WITH A FORGED SPIKE IN PLACE OF THE HEAD.....you will be happy it's lighter to handle sure but you will not like the fact that the spike they use bend and dull quickly and the lack of swinging weight makes it harder to stick a log from all directions and hold it while you move or load it).

One of the best kept secrets in the logging industry. Loggers (me included) have grown up using the "Hookeroon" or "Pickeroon" or "Sapper" as they are called depending on what part of the country your in. My Advice is simple, be sure the head is FORGED STEEL and it's hung with the grain of an American Hickory Handle in the proper orientation, take a good quality file and sharpen the point where it's as sharp as you can get it with a gradual taper and go to the woods......trust 20 years a loggers experience and you will pass this tool on to your someone in your family as one of your most prized and helpful tools. I NEVER GO TO THE WOODS WITHOUT IT, MY WEDGE DRIVING AXE AND CHAINSAW AND SAFETY GEAR....I WOULD TRULY BE LOST WITHOUT MINE.

I got acquainted with hookeroons/pickeroons in my millwright days, these save a considerable amount of bending over and hand mucking rounds around. with a little practice they are just a handy extension of the arm.

Although this item is heavier than my antique log pick; after sharpening the tip; it handles and works very well in manipulating logs. A very well-made piece.

I generally use my cant hook (also puchased from BM) to roll arond timber-sized logs on landings. But the hookaroon is better for flicking around firewood-sized logs. With the 3-foot solid hickory handle and sharp beak end; this is the superior tool to keep you working a pile of medium and small logs to gain some extra biomass ready to sell instead of leaving it to rot at the landing. A little money-maker!

I used a hookaroon, the "Red Head" hookaroon, for the first time today, and, as a disabled man who lost one leg, I can tell you that it was a great help in moving logs cut for firewood that I was splitting. My neighbor, a well experienced man in working with forests and cutting and splitting firewood, let me use his old one, and it is still in excellent condition after untold years of hard use.

The Council Hookaroon is one of the most useful tools for moving logs and firewood that I have ever found; in conjunction with a cant hook or peavey and log tongs for skidding the modern woodman has all the hand tools he needs to handle large trees. If left only one hand tool besides an axe, choose the Council Hookaroon.
